Connecting to a XenServer host from XenCenter might give you the following error: “Failed”,”Failed to connect to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send.”

In this example we’ll use 10.0.0.90 as the test IP.

The initial error you’ll see is this error below, when trying to connect to your host.

The error message shown in XenCenter

It’s happened for me a few times, and I’ve expected it to be a firewall issue every time. However, it’s often more simple than that. Here’s how to fix it:

  1. Open an SSH connection to the host.
  2. When you’re in, write xsconsole.
  3. When the UI opens, it’ll show as depicted below.
  4. Press F8 to restart xapi.
  5. When xapi has restarted, attempt connection again.
The underlying Xen API xapi is not running.

Upon connection, you should see that you can now connect without issues.

If it doesn’t work for you, write a comment. It would be great to see if there are other ways to solve this type of issue!

Over’n’out!
